Being a good example

Hey there, fellow dudes. Let’s get out there and be good examples today.

  • be kind
  • be calm
  • listen
  • support women defending women
  • speak up when someone attacks women, gay/trans folks, or the rest of the far-right’s traditional targets
  • don’t escalate
  • don’t make it about you

You won’t change anyone’s mind with words. No one does. But your behavior might change someone’s heart.

P. S. Pick large fights with your enemies, not small fights with your friends. Don’t demand perfection from people trying to help you. Perfection is a corrosive fantasy.

The Fable of Frog, Mouse, and Scorpion

(As told to Erisen of Beth by Minathiel Avicenna.)

In a land there was a river, and in the river there was an island. On the island lived Frog, Mouse, and Scorpion. They avoided each other and made no effort to interact, so they made ideal neighbors.

One rainy season, there was a flood, and the lowest parts of the island were taken by the water. As the water rose, it was obvious that their little island would soon be swept away. Neither Mouse nor Scorpion could swim.

Scorpion said to Frog, “Friend and neighbor Frog, will you please carry me away to high ground? If I stay here, I will perish.”

“I would like to,” Frog replied. “But how can I trust you not to sting me?”

“I want to sting you,” Scorpion said. “Very much. But if I sting you, I will drown. So you can see, you have nothing to fear.”

Still, Frog was careful, because Scorpion had stung many of Frog’s friends.

“I will carry you,” Frog said, “if you agree to let Mouse hold your tail so that you can’t sting me. If Mouse keeps you from stinging me, we can all reach safety together.”

Scorpion did not like this, but agreed to it.

Frog called to Mouse, who was doing nothing a short distance away. “Mouse! Come hold Scorpion’s tail, and we will all escape to safety!”

But Mouse was too busy doing nothing, and refused the request.

“Besides,” said Mouse. “Either Scorpion will sting me or Frog will drown me. No, thank you! Leave me out of it: you are both the same.”

“I feel I must point out,” Scorpion said to Frog, as Mouse left in a huff, “that all our agreement required of me was to allow Mouse to hold my tail, which I have agreed to do. What Mouse actually does or does not do was never part of our agreement. It is not fair to penalize me for something beyond my control.”

Frog considered this.

“We had an agreement, and I will honor it,” Frog said. “I will carry you. No stinging.”

“I promise,” Scorpion vowed.

The flood waters made swimming difficult, but Frog was strong and determined. Frog and Scorpion were halfway to safety when Frog felt the burning stab of Scorpion’s stinger.

“Why?” cried Frog, writhing in pain and trying to stay afloat. “Now we will both perish!”

“I can’t help it,” Scorpion said sadly. “It’s my nature.”

This was no comfort to Frog.

“I am sorry that it has ended this way,” Scorpion said, tumbling into the water from dying Frog’s back. “Thank you for trusting me.”

“I would do it again, I think,” Frog said.

“Why?” Scorpion asked, arms thrashing uselessly in the water. “Look what it brought you.”

“I can’t help it,” Frog said sadly. “It’s my nature.”

As Frog perished from venom and Scorpion drowned, Mouse watched from the shrinking island, but did nothing.

“They were both the same,” Mouse declared in triumph. “And I am much too smart to fall for that.” Because that was their nature.

Today I finished two projects that I started weeks ago. The first one was installation of some sound deadening material. The second one was the installation of a pull handle for the trunk lid. I made some mistakes, but nothing anyone will see. Overall, I am pleased with it.

Here is what I used for the handle, plus a couple of M6 nuts and washers ($9.99): https://amzn.to/4eV0xxx

Here is what I used for the sound deadening ($27.40): https://amzn.to/3Up3bTM

Project Wraith: stainless steel window trim

Today’s big exhausting project was installing stainless steel window trim from AliExpress (aka China). I am pleased with how it turned out. I cleaned the rubber thoroughly with Dawn beforehand, and I used 3M Adhesive Promoter. Hopefully, that will help them keep from flying off the car at freeway speeds. We shall see…

Until then, I love how this looks. It’s not perfect, but it does not need to be. 🙂

Project Wraith: BMR Jacking Rails

Today’s big exhausting project was installing a pair of BMR Super Low Profile Chassis Jacking Rails (Black Hammertone, Item # 398165, $178.96 incl. tax and shipping). It went super smoothly: only four bolts on each side. It took me around 90 minutes.

My new floor jack arrived today, too: a Husky 3 Ton Low Profile Floor Jack, (Black, Model # HD00120-DIP, $199.02 incl. tax and shipping). The Mustang weighs 1,000 lb more than the Tiburon did, and I didn’t trust my old jack. Look at this beast! Woot!

If you are ever in a movie

If you are ever in a movie:

  • Don’t mock the locals.
  • Do not touch your ear when speaking on your HANDS-FREE earpierce.
  • When sneaking, do not walk like a tap-dancing hunchback. It does not make you harder to see or hear.
  • Do not send five people into obviously deadly danger to rescue one person. Four of them will die, along with the person you wanted to save.
  • If someone asks who else you’ve told, say “I think it would be safer not to discuss that”. It’s not a lie. Also, they’re the villain.
  • Always take the weapon with you.
  • When the serial killer threatens to kill someone to force your cooperation, shoot them, right then. Don’t talk. Just shoot them. Immediately.
  • Don’t stop attacking the villain until they stop breathing.
  • Cut the villain’s head off immediately. Kick it away from the body.

Consider printing this out and carrying it with you, just in case.

Mustang projects: white tail lights

Today’s big exhausting project was replacing my OEM red tail lights with white tail lights. Apparently it’s a European thing, but l did it for the looks, and to preserve my original tail lights (which are now safely and comfortably stored in the box the white lights were packed in). For the original Wraith, a black 2003 Hyundai Tiburon GT, I blacked out almost everything. For Wraith 2.0, a “Dark Matter Gray Metallic” Ford Mustang GT Premium, I am going for a ghostly look.

I love how this turned out.

Incidentally, the interior is looking bare because I am in the middle of a back seat deletion project. There are a lot of steps that need to be done in order, so I have to focus on doing one step at a time. Replacing the tail lights was super easy: six nuts. It took me about an hour, plus an hour or two watching YouTube videos on how to do it. 🙂

Semantic drift

I think it’s interesting that terms like “Luddite” and “Uncle Tom” are misused as insults by people who know nothing about the Luddites or “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. My knee-jerk opinion is that most semantic drift is caused by ignorance, but in recent years, I think malice has become a major cause, as well (see also, “woke”).

Mustang projects: subwoofer speaker and enclosure

I decided to kitbash a Pioneer TS-A250D4 10″ Dual 4 ohms Voice Coil Subwoofer into the factory subwoofer enclosure rather than spend $1200 on a JL Stealthbox. In retrospect, I’m not sure it was the best choice, but the hard part is done. Now I just have to install the amp (Kicker 46CXA400.1T) and the line output converter (AudioControl LC2i) and run the wiring.

It looks better in person. 🙂

Update #1: I decided that I was unhappy with it. I have removed the carpet and the glue, and I’ll be re-doing that.

Dropsync settings for Obsidian (Android)

I use Obsidian as a daily journal for my own mental health, and for writing and organizing my fiction writing. I use Dropbox with Dropsync (on Android) to sync. I write primarily on my tablet (Android, using Dropsync), and occasionally on my desktop (Windows 10). I follow these rules:

1) Set up different configuration folders for my tablet and my desktop in Obsidian under “Files and links”. (e.g., “.obsidian-ulthar” for my desktop, “.obsidian-s9fe” for my tablet).

2) Always exit Obsidian when I am done.

3) Do not use Dropsync to auto-sync on my Obsidian folder (Android only).

4) Set up my Obsidian folder in Dropsync, including hidden files.
